Pep Cucurella

Pep Pérez Cucurella, born in Barcelona on July 2, 1969. He started playing electric bass at the age of 11 years of self-taught, recording his first album at 15. He studied at Taller de musics of Barcelona. Soon after, influenced by musicians like Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis, begins his concern for jazz, working with musicians the Barcelona scene, soon becoming one of the most sought both live and studio bass players, and recorded more than 100 albums to date.

His eclectic character, has led him to be immersed in very different musical areas, which has allowed him to deeply know styles such as jazz, funk, flamenco and Afro – Cuban music. That has led him to collaborate with musicians like Joan Manuel Serrat, Bebo Valdes, Jeff Ballard, Manu Dibango, Kathy Autrey, La Barberia del Sur, Chano Dominguez, Eladio Reinon, Thjis Van Leer, Max Suner, Enrique Morente, Estrella Morente, Miguel Poveda, Duquende, Mayte Martín, Jorge Pardo, Niño Josele, Jordi Pegenaute, Vicenç Solsona, Joan Díaz, David Gomez, Joan Albert Amargós, and with guitarist Vicente Amigo, with whom he worked for two years, touring around the world.

He has also traveled repeatedly to Japan to collaborate with Shoji Kojima. In 2002 he participates in the shooting of the film by Ventura Pons, “the big cat”. In 2,005 involved in the shooting of the film by Carlos Saura “IBERIA”. He has received five times the prize of l’Association of Jazz Musicians of Catalonia for the best bass player of the year.

He is currently professor of The Higher School of Music of Catalonia (ESMUC).
