Bowing and Rhythms to Groove By In most instances, specifically music which uses a 12-note system, we all have the same notes. If two players from two different traditions play the same notes, how can it sound so different? The answer is bow phrasing and articulation. In this workshop we will explore different bowing patterns and tendencies to get you grooving.
Learn to improvise and compose theme and variation movements, just like the master composers and virtuosi of the past. The rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic formulas that we cover may be easily applied to all genres.

Easy Tonal improvisation/arranging/Composition Through a series of easy playing and reading exercises, participants will learn how to create functional melodies over chord progressions and at the same time develop insights into the "magic" of harmonic and melodic relationships. Through the lens of Pachelbel's Canon, melodic improvisation and composition are demystified as we discover how to easily construct melodies following three simple rules. Anyone with a basic music reading level can develop the ability to easily compose melodies, bass lines, and counter-melodies in many styles. Throughout the session participants will improvise over the Pachelbel progression and other chord progressions in bluegrass, reggae, waltz, rock, latin, and classical styles!

Understanding some elementary musical functions on our instruments can be a good way to help on this. We will use some pieces to work on music from different function ways: Melodic, rhythmic, accompaniment and bass functions.
